Alright kiddies, today I’m talking about the double standards that black people and white people are held to by society. Leggo.
This is Cory Monteith.
He died on July 13, 2013 from a drug overdose. (Disclaimer: I’m not in ANY way saying his death wasn’t saddening.) Corey said that his problems with drugs and alcohol began when he was around 12 years old. His parents staged an intervention when he was 19 years old but shortly afterwards Corey was caught stealing a large sum of money where he was then given an ultimatum of “get clean or go to jail”. He then changed his entire life around, scoring the job on Glee in 2009. Apparently whenever he would return to his native Canada, he’d be surrounded by people that fueled him to use again, ultimately ending in his life in 2013.
It seemed like all of America was mourning his loss. No one ever said his death was his own fault and no one was saying that he deserved to die because of his drug use. No one really wanted to talk about the CAUSE of his death, they just celebrated his accomplishments and achievements as a person and as an actor.
This is Whitney Houston.
She died by drowning in a bathtub due to a mix of her atherosclerotic heart disease and cocaine use on February 12, 2012. Now obviously people were mourning the singing legend but the jokes that ensued after her death were ridiculous. “I guess crack wasn’t really that wack” and offensive things like that. Some people had this attitude that she deserved her death after so many years of drug use. Its no secret Whitney struggled with drugs for many years of her life but that doesn’t mean her life had any less merit than Corey’s.
Its REAL obvious when black and white people have a drug addiction, white users are seen as having a health issue while black users are treated as criminals.
This is Joseph Houseman.
He is an ‘open carry’ advocate and got into a standoff with police in May 4, 2014 in Kalamazoo, Michigan in front of a Dairy Queen. He held up a loaded rifle and waved it at traffic for a while until the police were contacted by an unknown caller.
This is a part of their confrontation:
JOSEPH HOUSEMAN: That’s my First Amendment right.
POLICE: No it’s not. You can’t swear.
HOUSEMAN: That’s bullshit. I can threaten you if I want to.
POLICE: That’s incorrect.
HOUSEMAN: I can threaten you. I can threaten your family. I didn’t threaten your family; I said I could.
POLICE: You said a war was coming.
HOUSEMAN: I didn’t say a war was coming.
POLICE: You said a revolution is coming.
HOUSEMAN: Think about it. You know it is.
40 minutes later Joseph ‘surrendered’. Within the 40 minutes, Joseph refused to identify himself, flipped off police officers, and cursed them out. He was also intoxicated & had no form of identification on his person. When captured, he refused to take a breathalyzer test THEN was told to come to the police station the next day AND RETRIEVE HIS GUN.
This man literally waved a loaded rifle in front of the police, LIVED, AND HIS GUN WAS RETURNED.
W H A T ?
This is John Crawford III. He was shot to death by police on August 5, 2014 in Beavercreek, Ohio because he was holding a BB Gun in Walmart and ‘scared the other shoppers’. LeeCee Crawford, mother of his kids, was on the phone with him when the shooting happened. She told Dayton Daily News:
“We was just talking,” she told the Ohio newspaper. “He said he was at the video games playing videos and he went over there by the toy section where the toy guns were. And the next thing I know, he said ‘It’s not real,’ and the police start shooting and they said ‘Get on the ground,’ but he was already on the ground because they had shot him. And I could hear him just crying and screaming. I feel like they shot him down like he was not even human.”
John was only 22 years old.
This man was walking around a store WHICH SELLS BB GUNS, had the police called on him, and was murdered on site without the police even INVESTIGATING what the situation was first.
The 911 caller Ronald Ritchie completely lied on the 911 call, saying John was ‘pointing the weapon at people’ EVEN THOUGH in the surveillance videos in the Walmart show he was carrying it with one hand, not aiming it at ANYONE.
Ritchie HIMSELF backtracks and says “It just looked like, at the time, that he pulled the rifle to them and they shot him twice.”
I watched the video myself and if I saw him in the store, I wouldn’t think anything of it! Nearly EVERYTHING that Ritchie said in the 911 call was a lie. Him calling the police cost John his life.
W H A T ?
I remember my dad and I were watching Nancy Grace when this happened and I got the sickest feeling in my stomach because my dad had just recently bought me a Red Ryder BB Gun (from the Christmas Story) as a gift. I just remember thinking how it could’ve been my dad and that scared the hell out of me.
So we have a white man who waved a LOADED RIFLE at traffic AND the police for 40 minutes LIVED AND GOT HIS GUN BACK and then a black man who was walking in a store that sold BB guns WITH a BB gun who got the police called on him by an ass of a 911 caller that ended in his untimely death.
This is the double standard I’m talking about. You know, YOU KNOW if Joseph Houseman had been black, he would have been dead in 0.2 seconds. Also if John Crawford had been white, no one would have batted an eye at him.
These cases just make me go:
NEWSFLASH: When you’re white you can get away with A LOT more.
White privilege (or white skin privilege) is a term for societal privileges that benefit people identified as white in Western countries, beyond what is commonly experienced by non-white people under the same social, political, or economic circumstances.
Most white people have a skewed view of the world. Whether it be that racism doesn’t exist or that the prison system isn’t geared to put more minorities in jail, or that Donald Trump is looking out for the working class. White privilege allows white people to detach from the struggles people of color face under the guise of “I don’t experience it so it doesn’t exist.”
Now having white privilege in NO way means there cannot be poor white people or white people that are down on their luck. That’s just trifling. It just means they’d have a better chance to advance in today’s society. An example of this would be a white person and a black person walking into a gas station. Can you guess which one is most likely to be followed? If you guessed the black person then congrats, you’re correct.
You may be thinking “How is NOT being followed around a store a privilege?”
Well the answer to that is its SO much deeper than the store. White privilege is being given the benefit of the doubt EVEN if your behavior is suspicious. White privilege is being able to walk around in any neighborhood and not feel unwelcome or unsafe. The simple, everyday things that white people take for granted are things that people of color would kill to have.
Another example would be the dumbing down of the black race as a whole. Like being AMAZED (not genuinely amazed, like “why I had no idea a negro could be so accomplished” amazed) a black person went to college or wrote a book or owns a successful business.
I’d love for people to believe I actually wrote this blog with no help but people just reduce me to an “articulate negro who is good with words.”
My dad wrote a book AND has a law degree BUT people still see him as an “articulate negro who is booksmart.”
My mom has a degree in social work but people just see her as a “pretty, articulate negro who has people skills.”
I mean my ninth grade English teacher called me up to her desk and asked me if I had written an essay myself. Translation: “Negros don’t write this well so this MUST be plagiarized!” I mean my 9th grade self didn’t know how to deal with that but my 11th grade self would have been picketing the NEXT day.
Little micro-aggressions like that have a major effect on black kids and causes us to carry stuff like that into adulthood. That whole “You can’t be good at anything because black people are [lazy, stupid, dim witted, not ambitious]” is ingrained in us and its REALLY hard to unlearn completely.
The bottom line is that double standards between white people and black people exist and are alive and well and unless EVERYONE has a hand in disbanding then its going to continue.
